Apple iPad’s most striking feature, its gorgeous 9.7-inch touchscreen display, uses liquid crystal display technology — but with a few unusual twists — to present a vivid image and a wide viewing angle.

“The iPad’s display uses the same capacitive touchscreen technology as the iPhone and iPod Touch,” says Vinita Jakhanwal, principal analyst for iSuppli. “At the same time, it offers a better picture quality than conventional LCDs.”

After months of speculation, Apple launched its tablet, the iPad on Wednesday.  The lightweight device (1.5 pounds) features a luminous touchscreen and a user interface similar to the iPhone. The iPad, which can cost $500 to $830 depending on the model, runs an expanded version of the operating system used in the iPhone.

Apple CEO Steve Jobs introduced the iPad’s screen as a LED-backlit with In-Plane Switching (IPS). Jobs was referring to a type of LCD screen that is more often found in HDTVs than it is in mobile devices.

So-called twisted nematic LCDs have dominated consumer laptop and phone displays. The viewing angle on these screens is limited, ranging from 110 to 120 degrees. When the screen is viewed outside this optimal range, its colors can look “off” and the overall image is faded or invisible.

In-Plane Switching helps fix those problems. In IPS LCD screens, the crystal molecules are oriented so their motion is parallel to the panel, instead of perpendicular to it. For viewers, the result is a very wide viewing angle — up to 180 degrees — with brilliant color.

“TVs have always used some variation of IPS in their LCD screens but now we are seeing this move to smaller computing devices,” says Jakhanwal.

The iPad’s screen, though, doesn’t have a wide aspect ratio, which is unusual in the TV-display world, says research firm DisplaySearch. Instead of a 16:10 or 16:9 aspect ratio, the iPad screen uses a 4:3 ratio.

“Perhaps they were trying to find a middle ground between the requirements for books, magazines and newspapers and the requirements for video and gaming,” say analysts at DisplaySearch.

The iPad display has some other interesting features. It is arsenic- and mecury-free and has a fingerprint-resistant oleophobic coating, which Apple had introduced in the iPhone 3G S. The iPad’s 1024 x 768 display resolution, at 132 pixels per inch, has chunkier pixels than the iPhone 3G S, which has a smaller display but a resolution of 163 pixels per inch.

But that may not be a fair comparison, says Jakhanwal. “If you have a smaller form factor, you need a higher resolution to better read the information on the display,” she says. Also, she adds, “the iPad has a more vivid display than a laptop screen.”

The iPad’s display is likely sourced from LG Display and Innolux, says iSuppli.

The biggest disappointment for tech enthusiasts is the lack of an OLED screen option in the iPad. That should be no surprise, say DisplaySearch and iSuppli. Display manufacturers just don’t have the fabrication capacity to create large quantities of big OLED displays, says Jakhanwal.

“The single supplier for active-matrix OLED screen today, Samsung Mobile, current production capacity is all taken up by the mobile phone market,” she says. That means large volumes of very small screens.

“It’s unlikely they will scale back on that to produce lower volume, larger displays for Apple.”

Sony also produces OLED screens but in limited quantities, largely for its own products, like the Sony XEL-1.

Though Apple showed the iPad’s potential as an e-book reader, iSuppli and DisplaySearch remain skeptical about it. LCD screens, even in black-and-white mode, get washed out in bright sunlight. And if users turn on the backlight to improve the contrast, they are likely to draw down the device’s battery. On top of that, reading on an LCD means you’re staring into a light source, which produces more eyestrain than reading words by reflected light, as you do with printed pages or E Ink displays like those used in the Kindle, Nook and Sony Reader.

“Ultimately, reading for a few hours on a handheld LCD screen can be quite a strain,” says Jakhanwal.

Watching TV by Laconik

What I've FoundBlog

February 10th, 2010 by melvinroach1950

These days, buying a decent plasma is often a lot more expensive than building your own media center. If you’ve been living under a rock for the past few years, a media center is basically a PC that’s focused solely on media playback. Check out our PDF guide on how to set up your own media center, written by Stefan Neagu.

For the past year or so, I’ve been using Windows 7 on my media center. It’s quick, smooth, and the new Windows Media Center makes it an incredible improvement over Vista. It also supports most PCI TV tuners. Lately, I came to realize the stupidity of all it. Television shows haven’t been accounting to much lately, and the Windows 7 price tag isn’t worth it if you’re only using it for music and movies.

Enna

Although Boxee seemed the more obvious choice, it loses the high ground if you lack a decent internet connection. Just when I was about to give up hope, I heard about Enna – an incredible open source Linux media center, developed by the GeeXboX team, and ready for its first public release.

Enna can be installed on top of your Linux distro (e.g. Ubuntu) as a standalone app. But if you don’t want to make “the switch”, you can just use the GeeXboX live CD. You can boot Enna straight from the disk, without installing any alternative operating systems. If you want, you can even keep your default Windows installation running underneath.

Movies and Music

Keep in mind that the Enna Linux media center is a very standard app. It packs the very basic features in a most enticing and graphical user interface. If you’re looking for a surplus of widgets and online connectivity, you’re probably looking for Boxee.

That said, if you’re a standard media freak, Enna should sate your initial hunger, especially for a first public release.

Enna is great for browsing media files on your hard disk – both video and audio. You can also use Enna to pop an old-fashioned DVD. Sadly, this first release does not yet support audio CDs. This feature is promised to be included in one of the other upcoming releases, together with podcast support and VDB TV tuner functionality.

Photographs and Books

Apart from video and music, you can also use the Enna Linux media center software for photo slideshows. Next time your mother-in-law celebrates another wrinkle, surprise her and the rest of the family with a stunning slideshow. I’m not much of a picture-person myself, but I love to use slideshows to decorate a room, and create a pleasant ambience.

This last feature came as a surprise to me. In the bookstore, you can grab your favorite books and comics from the web, and read them from the couch. Enna currently supports GoComics and OneManga for content synchronisation.

Obviously, you want be able to read Shakespeare on your media center, but you can flick through a few (web)comics when you’re bored. As the names suggest, you can access both western comic panels and Japanese manga. Download Enna Media Center here.

What do you think of Enna? Or do you prefer another media center? Tell us which and why in the comments section below!

Elgato has untroduced the EyeTV One to the US market, its lowest-priced TV tuner for DTV antennas for Mac solution for $119.95 (or $101 at Amazon).

EyeTV One delivers digital TV and HDTV channels straight to a Mac or PC, enabling users to watch and record the huge variety of TV shows that are broadcast over-the-air for free - it’s an HDVR for the Mac (or PC).

The product ships with Elgato’s EyeTV 3, which enables users to watch, pause, and rewind live TV on a Mac, as well as record shows, subscribe to a favorite TV series, and create Smart Playlists. EyeTV 3 has a built-in editor to remove unwanted content and can automatically send recordings to iTunes to sync with an iPhone, iPod, or Apple TV. Recordings can be shared over a local network with other Macs. Elgato also offers optional apps to stream live TV and manage recording schedules on an iPhone while away from home.

Users who have a Windows PC as well as a Mac can use EyeTV One with either computer. EyeTV One is compatible with Windows 7 and works with Windows Media Center.

G5 and PC by soto no kusa

Will televisions sets become a thing of the past now that we can watch our favorite shows on our laptops? Probably not - we'll always have a use for both options. There's nothing quite like relaxing in front of the tube with friends or family on the couch, but being able to watch television while you're out and about can make traveling, commuting and other activities that call you away from home that much more enjoyable.

How to Watch TV on Your Laptop No. 1: Slingbox

Sling Media has a few Slingbox products that you can choose from to watch television on your laptop. I recommend Slingbox Pro, which runs around $129. Slingbox Pro will let you watch and control up to four video sources when you use HD connect from anywhere in the world. When you use Slingbox, you virtually take your home theater with you. You can control your digital cable, DVR, satellite receiver and DVD player, even if you're on the other side of the United States. Slingbox Pro even has a built-in TV tuner so that you can have access to your basic cable line up without changing your set up on your television at home. There is no monthly fee to use your Slingbox software.

How to Watch TV on Your Laptop No. 2: MobiTV

Currently, you can get MobiTV through AT&T Broadband TV. This allows you to watch television on any PC. This service is only available in the U.S. System requirements are a computer system with Windows XP, Internet Explorer 6+, Flash 8+ and Windows Media Player 9+. They advertise it as live television without the TV, plus you don't have to buy any hardware to work with your existing laptop. You simply watch live television through AT&T and get your choice of more than 30 channels. With MobiTV, there is a monthly fee but you can get a 14-day free trial to see if it's the right fit for your lifestyle. The only downside is that not all channels may be available to you during your free trial. Package prices start at $9.99 and go up.

How to Watch TV on Your Laptop No. 3: Beyond TV 4.7

Beyond TV 4.7 offers the option to watch and record television with your PC. With Beyond TV 47 you can skip commercials or parts of a show you don't want to watch. There is never a subscription fee. If you get the additional DVD Burning and H.264 Plug-In, you can burn your favorite television shows. The cost to get Beyond TV 47 is high (around $180) but since you'll never have to pay a subscription fee like MobiTV, it might be well worth the one time price.

How to Watch TV on your Laptop No. 4: Sony's LocationFree TV

With Sony's LocationFree TV, you can connect wirelessly to your own home network and watch television on your laptop. Watching television away from home is super easy. You are able to log in and instantly watch live TV, change channels and more. There is an onscreen remote that is easy to use. The LocationFree Wireless Base Station from Sony runs for around $200 with no monthly fees.

How to Watch TV on Your Laptop No. 5: TivoToGo

TivoToGo is accessible if you have a series two or later TiVo video recorder with home networking. After you've downloaded the TivoToGo software on your laptop, you can access shows that you've recorded on your TiVo box. The only monthly fee is what you already pay for your Tivo, although you may need to buy other hardware if you don't have the series two video recorder.

In my opinion, Slingbox is the best deal. You get better selection since it's through your own cable service and you only have to pay the one time fee to get the hardware. So if you want to watch television on your laptop, consider Slingbox first and weigh the pros and cons of each service to see which one will truly fit your lifestyle.

The FaxJournal

January 9th, 2010 by melvinroach1950

We all know fax is almost obsolete. We also know that a lot of companies or individuals are still sticking to fax as a way of sending and receiving documents. Fax is expensive because you need to buy a fax machine plus all the papers you need and ink for receiving fax even though more half of those doesn’t need to be printed out.

I think it’s time everyone use an online fax service. You will save money on paper and ink because every fax will be in your email and all fax will be “need to print” basis. No waste on paper and ink I’d say. You also don’t need to buy a fax machine because everything is done through your computer and I think most houses have computer nowadays, some households even have multiples computers.

Fax to email is also mobile. I mean you can get your fax or send one wherever you are. You can be at the airport and yo can fax your quotation to your client via internet. the same thing can be said when receiving because you just need to check your email to see if you have fax waiting to be read.

Cost is also a factor here. Because your fax goes through the internet, you don’t need to pay long distance when sending out and you don’t need to turn on your fax machine all day to receive fax.

The only downside I see from internet faxing is if you don’t have a scanner and you need to send a document in hard form. But I think most people now have their documents in digital form already and a lot of households have scanners too. Scanners are so cheap you can get one under $50.

Here are the pros and cons of online fax machine.

Pros

1. Save ink and paper

2. Save on fax machine

3. Doesn’t tie up your telephone

4. Receive and send fax anywhere and everywhere.

5. You are helping Mother Earth

Cons

1. Need a scanner to send documents in hard form

2. Can’t think of any.

I personally use Onesuite fax to email feature because I need to send and receive fax from time to time and because I already have an account with Onesuite for my long distance needs, I go with their fax service too. I got a US local number (CA) and all incoming fax are free.

I am pretty sure a lot of bloggers here also still sending and receiving fax, maybe not everyday but still.  So I suggest you ditch the traditional faxing method and go with online faxing. Choose an online fax provider that suits your needs and check if they have a trial period and give it a shot.

Go green and help save mother earth and save some $$$ in the process.

If your child’s school is anything like mine, you get papers and pictures sent home all through the year, but when the school year ends your child comes home with bags full of papers and projects and you’re left drowning in a sea of school memories.

A lot of parents simply box these papers up and put them into the attic only to throw them away in the future, or sort through them and only keep the best; but what if there was a simple and fun craft that you could do with your child that would keep all these papers neatly in one place? Scrapbooking these papers and projects is the perfect way to save these memories and to keep the job from being too overwhelming, you could set up one night a week to work on the books with your child.

On the first night you’ll need to simply sort through the papers, separating them by subject. Then each of you go through each pile and pick out your favorites, then go through the discard pile again to make sure you haven’t missed any papers you want to keep. Now you have some idea of how many pages you’ll need in your scrapbook; you can either go all out and get whole scrapbooking kits and supplies at a crafts store or you can go to a discount superstore and get less expensive supplies but the most important thing you will need is your child’s imagination.

Allow your child to control this project with you as assistant and supervisor, after all, these are his or her memories and he or she will be the one who ends up with the book; as with any project, the more input a child has in it, the more interest he or she will have. Spreading the work out over a few weeks will also keep your child’s interest fresh instead of burning it out in a day-long marathon of work.

Give your child total creative freedom and make sure there are plenty of decorative supplies to choose from; small foam shapes, paper to cut borders or shapes from, buttons, rhinestones, crayons, markers, glitter and plenty of glue. If you are a truly ambitious parent, you can make a party of it with a few of your child’s friends; if each parent sends over different supplies then there will be more options for the children to choose from. You could even make it a traveling party and have it at a different house every week; not only does this make the project more enjoyable for the children; it takes the entire burden off of one parent.

At the end of a few weeks you will have a lasting memory of your child’s school year and your child will have a lasting memory of making the scrapbook. You may even start a yearly tradition that your child will then carry on with his or her children. Not only will those precious memories be safely and neatly preserved, but you’ll get rid of all those boxes in your attic

merry christmas! by anzyAprico

I grew up surrounded by Christmas trees. The Christmas trees were scattered throughout the national forest that circled my hometown. Every year my family would go out into the forest and cut our own Christmas tree. Often there would already be a few inches of snow on the ground that made the forest almost magical and which added to our sense of adventure. We took our time—we had to find the perfect tree.

The perfect Christmas tree was an image each of us held in our minds and dreams and some years we got very close to it. The tree had to be about six feet tall, a Douglas Fir with a perfect taper and very bushy with no bare spots. When we found the tree my father would saw it down and then we’d drag it to the car. It was surprisingly heavy. We would heft it to the top of the car and then tie it down.

You, too, can cut your own Christmas tree. Many urban areas have tree farms where you can cut your own tree, but that’s not what I’m talking about. I’m talking about the real thing: getting out into a real forest and searching for your perfect Christmas tree.

All national forests allow Christmas tree cutting but you do need to have a permit. In most forests, demand is greater than supply so they use a lottery system to select those who will receive a permit. In a forest like the Angeles National Forest so near to Los Angeles, the demand is huge and your chances of getting a permit are small. But some forests are not near big urban areas and almost everyone who applies gets a permit. If you live in an urban area, you could combine a little getaway with cutting your own tree.

Applications for permits are taken in September and permits are issued in October or November. There is a refundable $10 fee.

If you are lucky enough to get a permit you may cut only the kind of tree specified on the permit, say a fir or a juniper, and you must cut only in areas designated by the permit. Cut the tree close to the ground and trim branches from the stump. No stump can be more than six inches from the ground. Do not cut the top off a taller tree, no matter how close to the perfect Christmas tree it may be. Cut out of sight of the nearest road. An armful of green branches may be taken without a permit. Be sure to follow the rules because forest rangers have a habit of popping out of nowhere and you could end up with the most expensive Christmas tree you ever had.

When you get your tree home, store it in a shady area and keep it in water until it is time to bring it into the house. Your tree will be much fresher than those you buy in a lot will, but you still need to keep it in water in the house. Once you get it up and decorated you can sit back and bask in its glow and it will be more beautiful because you cut it yourself.

Here's what I am working on this Christmas eve.

christmas ornaments inspired by maileg by Lottakind

It's that time of year once again. The family is in a frenzy, the malls have become a crowded mess, and the pressure is on to find the perfect gifts, decorations, and deals. That's right. The holiday season is here, and to make it all slightly less stressful, Bronner's Christmas Wonderland is here to the rescue. Open year round, Bronner's can make holiday gift giving easy, help locate hard to find or personalized gifts, or can help to enjoy and appreciate the holiday spirit after the holiday stress has worn down.

Located in Frankenmuth, Michigan, Bronner's Christmas Wonderland is the world's largest year round Christmas store. On any given day of the year, the Bronner's Christmas Wonderland is decorated and well light in the spirit of Holidays. Located on a well illuminated 1/2 mile long Christmas Lane, and with a replica of the Oberndorf, Austria, Silent Night Memorial Chapel, life size nativity scene, and “silent Night” hymn echoing on it's grounds,Christmas is truly celebrated and enjoyed by all year round. For 60 years the Bronner family has been offering it's holiday services 361 days per year to more than 2 million customers annually.

The fascination with Bronner's goes far beyond the excellent customer service, or the intrigue of year round holiday joy. The Bronner family truly goes out of their way to include all nationalities, languages, religions, beliefs and budgets. The bible, for example, can be found here in more than 20 languages, decorations and gifts from 70 nations are on display, and more than 50,000 items can be found in their massive 7 acre warehouse. The selection available is the largest I have ever seen. More than 1,000 Precious Moments figurines and over 800 Hummel figurines are readily available. Bronner's also offers more than 500 styles of Nativity scenes, 6,000 styles of ornaments in over 70 languages, more than 350 decorated Christmas trees, and over 700 animated figurines just to name a few of the many enchantments. Bronner's offers gifts, collectibles, interior and outdoor home decorations, trees, books, postcards, wreaths, and more. Order personalized ornaments for yourself, your home, family, teacher, staff, or customers easily.

According to the Bronner's website, “visitors purchase more than 1.3 million ornaments, over 700,000 feet of garland, nearly 100,000 postcards, and over 135,000 light sets annually”. Those numbers are staggering, but as a Michigan resident who has a long line of memories at this year round wonderland I know those numbers are very well believable. Purchases can be made in person, on the web(www.bronners.com), over the telephone by calling 1(800)361-6736, or through the store catalog but I truly recommend visiting if possible. If your family, like mine is so caught up in the stress that you have forgotten the true meaning of Christmas, enchant yourselves with the beauty, spirit, and history of the holiday season no matter what your beliefs or customs. The 27 acres of beautifully decorated property truly is magical. For more information about this magnificent wonderland or to browse their products online, please visit their website at www.bronners.com or to learn more about Frankenmuth and plan a stay please visit www.frankenmuth.org.

first signs of christmas by Ron Layters

Two highly recommended places in Dallas for all your top-of-the-line holiday gifts and trimmings are the Dallas Galleria and the Noel Christmas Store. The Dallas Galleria really has everything but for the very special Christmas decorations and collectables, the Noel Christmas Store, just three-miles away, is the place to go.

A Dallas Galleria Christmas

Dallas' Galleria is always one of the most enjoyable Dallas shopping experiences but imagine the over two hundred up-scale stores on three levels all decked out in their Christmas finest. Its truly breathtaking! The serious Christmas shopper could easily spend the better part of a day browsing at the remarkably inventive window displays, oooing and ahhhing over the beautiful mall Christmas tree, finding gifts for friends and family, making several trips to the car with armloads of treasures and just breathing in the Christmas atmosphere.

The Dallas Galleria's anchor stores are giants in their industry: Nordstrom, Macy's, Saks Fifth Avenue and Banana Republic. The Galleria also offers a beautiful public ice-skating rink, the four-star Westin Galleria Hotel, a multi-story office building complex, 10,000 parking spots (most of them covered) and more than 25 places to appease your thirst or appetite.

Location:

I-635 (LBJ Freeway) and Dallas Parkway North
Dallas, Texas

Hours:

Monday through Saturday from 10:00 a.m. until 9:00 p.m.; Sunday from noon until 6:00 p.m.
These are the normal Galleria hours but during the Christmas shopping season (after Thanksgiving) hours are normally extended.

The Noel Christmas Store

The Noel Christmas Store may not be Dallas' only year-round Christmas store, but it is the largest and many say the best. The Noel Christmas Store offers you all the beautiful ornaments, lights and trimmings and the very finest collectables you could ask for whenever your Christmas spirit is in high gear . . . even during one of our sweltering August days (when thinking about Christmas just might cool you down). Trees too! A world-class selection of Barcana artificial trees. Barcana has been the best-known name in quality artificial, fold-up Christmas trees for over 50 years.

This year, for the first time, the Noel Christmas Store has a website and is fully set up for e-commerce. They apologize for not having “everything” on their website but what they do have is a spectacular 65-page spread that makes you want to rush to the store to see what they could possibly have left out.

The Noel Christmas Store has been in business since 1986. At first they were only open during the Christmas holidays but in 1991 they opened their doors year-round and, because business was so good, they moved in 1992 to larger quarters on the southwest corner of Preston Road and I-635 (LBJ Expressway)and just 3-miles east of Dallas' famous Galleria Shopping Center. All that time, the Noel Christmas Store has been a family owned and operated business and has hired only Christmas specialists to assist their customers.
