What is IRS Form 8849?

Form 8849, Schedule 6, allows you to claim a refund for the federal Heavy Vehicle Use Tax (HVUT) you’ve already paid on a vehicle that is no longer taxable. You may qualify if your truck was sold, destroyed, stolen, or driven 5,000 miles or less during the tax year (7,500 miles for agricultural vehicles). Filing Form 8849 allows you to recover the unused portion of your HVUT for that vehicle.

Our refund calculator helps you quickly estimate how much the IRS may owe you- before you even start filing.

Can I Apply for My Credit While Filing Form 2290?

Yes. You can start by filing for multiple vehicles on eform2290.com, you can add both taxable and credit vehicles in the same return.

  • If your credit amount is less than your total tax due, it will be applied to reduce your tax payment.
  • If your credit amount is greater than your tax due, you’ll need to file a separate Form 8849 to claim the remaining balance.
